Although slowly losing popularity, telnet remains a very valuable tool. The telnet client is not installed by default on Windows 7. These are the steps required to enable it for use.
Still using telnet instead of SSH? Going old school with the old tool? 🙂
Although I agree that Windows should eliminate rarely used tools from the default install, it still seems weird that telnet isn’t around on most installed systems. Here is how to get your old friend telnet available again…
1. Click Start
2. Select Control Panel
3. Select Programs
4. Select Programs And Features
5. Click Turn Windows features on or off
6. Check Telnet Client
7. Click OK
8. Wait for the “Please Wait…” box
After following this process, you’ll be able to access telnet from the command prompt or the search box in the Start menu.
