It is mostly because you can use the same facebook account, the app syncs mobile contacts, and facebook friends. So you can text your friends and family all in one place. There are many features to facebook messenger that distinguish this app from others like WhatsApp and Viber etc.
We all face two types of situations. First, we receive a text from a person whom we do not want to correspond to but we want to make sure they don’t get the image that we ignored their message. Second, we don’t have time and we want a reminder of the message later. You and I know that it’s mostly the first, but who’s asking? 🙂

Step-by-Step Procedure on unreading a Facebook Messenger message.
On the Facebook web app
1. Login to your Facebook account
2. Look for the classic messenger icon on the top
3. Click “See all in messenger”
4. Click on the options menu of the conversation tab that you want to unread
5. Click “Mark as unread”

1. Click on the dot. On the conversation that you want to unread
On Facebook Messenger App
1. Open “Messenger app”
2. Click the conversation that you want to unread long enough to open a menu.
3. Click on unread
