Office 2010: Customize Existing Ribbon Tabs and Create New Ones

You can make Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook easier to use by customizing existing tabs on the Ribbon. You can also create new tabs to use as a quick access for multiple types of commands.

To customize an existing tab:

1. Open an Office 2010 application (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, or Outlook).

2. Go to the top of the Ribbon and click the Office Button (in our example, we will use Outlook).

3. Click on the Options button.

4. In the left pane, select Customize Ribbon.

5. In the right pane, find the desired tab in the list of available tabs and expand it.

6. Use the list of available commands and the Add/Remove buttons to customize the tab.

7. Click the OK button.

To create a new tab:

1. Open an Office 2010 application (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, or Outlook).

2. Go to the top of the Ribbon and click the Office Button (in our example, we will use Outlook).

3. Click on the Options button.

4. In the left pane, select Customize Ribbon.

5. In the right pane, go to the bottom right corner and click the New Tab button. A new tab will show in the list of available tabs.

6. Right-click the newly created tab on the list and select Rename. Input an appropriate name for your new tab.

7. With the new tab selected in the list, click the New Group button. This will create a group so you can keep similar commands together.

8. Right-click the newly created group and select Rename. Input an appropriate name for your new group.

9. Go to the Choose commands from dropdown and select All Commands.

10. Select the desired commands from the list and add them to your newly created group by using the Add/Remove buttons.

11. Repeat steps 8-10 until you have finished creating your new tab.

12. Click the OK button.

Your new tab will now be located in the Ribbon.
