iPod Shuffle: Simulate the hold switch

Bigger iPods have a hold switch which prevents unintentional button presses. While size does matter in a portable music devices, the Shuffle’s small stature didn’t leave space for a hold button. No problem, though. This trick will show you how to lock and unlock your little shuffle.


While listening to your Shuffle, press and hold the play/pause button for a few seconds. When you press this button, the green light will turn on solid. When it blinks amber and turns off, your Shuffle is in hold mode. Brief button presses will not affect it, although the off switch will still work.

To unhold your Shuffle, repeat the process. Press and hold the play/pause button. The light will be solid amber and when it flashes green you’re good to go.
