You have your map pulled up and the iPad knows your current location, but have no idea which direction you are going? By accessing Map’s digital compass interface, you can get your bearings and then switch back to map view and get on with your travels.
To find your current location, tap the 
icon in the status bar.
To access the digital compass, tap the icon again. It will change to 
.
A small compass will appear in the upper right corner of the screen.
The first time that you use the compass, you will need to calibrate it. Follow the onscreen directions.
After you have figured out which way to go, tap the icon again to return to map view.
