Nintendo has still not moved towards using a name or avatar based online system yet. Thankfully they have made it so that you will only need ONE friend code for your 3DS versus each game using a unique code. This tech-recipe will explain where to find your Friend Code once you have a Mii setup on your new Nintendo 3DS.
1. On the main 3DS Menu, tap the Friend List icon (orange smiley box)
2. Tap on your Mii
3. Your Friend Code will be shown on the upper screen in the lower area.
